There’s something powerful about a small detail that carries a big story.
When we launched our macramé straps for the Tankwa Boots in collaboration with Jaguarita, we intended to do more than just add an accessory. We were weaving another layer of meaning into the journey ROF-Style has always been about: connection, craft and the open road.

In this blog, we want to take you behind the boots and into the hands that made the straps, the story behind the design and how two founders from the same corner of the world found each other from opposite sides of it.

A Collaboration Rooted in Connection

Laura, the founder of ROF-Style, and Cat, the founder of Jaguarita, both grew up in the same countryside in the Netherlands. But they never met there.
One moved to South Africa, one to Mexico. It took years and thousands of kilometres before their paths crossed. And when they did, it was clear that something beautiful could grow from their shared love of intentional living, craft and adventure.

From this connection, the idea was born: to create something small, meaningful and handmade that could travel the world on the boots people already loved. Something rooted in tradition, but made to move.

Handmade in Chiapas, Mexico

Jaguarita works directly with a mother-daughter duo based in the hills of Chiapas, Mexico, who weave each strap slowly and by hand. No machines, no shortcuts.

Each strap takes a full day to make, and the care and intention of that process is part of what makes them so special.

The straps are made from 100% cotton and feature a pattern known as Diamante, drawn from Zapotec tradition. The design carries layers of meaning, passed down through generations of Indigenous weavers.

The Meaning Behind the Diamante Pattern

The Diamante (Spanish for “diamond”) represents a symmetry of four energies found in the human body, according to Zapotec cosmology:

•Above the navel: Quetzalli, the bird energy:spirit, freedom and breath.•Below the navel: Coatl, the serpent energy:instinct, transformation and groundedness.•To the right: Tonal:your conscious self, your actions, your waking world.•To the left: Nagual:your subconscious self, the dreamer, the hidden layers of who you are.

The design weaves these together into one form, balanced and strong. In a way, it mirrors everything we love about boots and the journeys we take in them.

These straps were designed specifically for our Tankwa Boots, the adventure-ready, festival-tested, forever-classic ROF-Style staple. They’re available in all three of our leather colours (cognac, black and brown) and in your choice of silver or brass buckle to suit your look.

Festival Vibes & the Season of Connection

We launched the straps as part of our Season of Connection campaign. It was a reminder that it’s not always the big things that bring us together. Sometimes it’s in the music you share with a stranger at a festival. It was about the road between here and wherever you’re headed next. About boots dusted and straps buckled. More than that, it was about the choice to wear something handmade, because you care where it came from. A celebration of freedom, movement and the threads that connect us. Because adventure isn’t always about where you’re going; it’s about the people you meet, the stories you collect and the threads that tie it all together.

Our visuals followed that story. Our ROF Girls hitchhiking to a festival, dressed up for the occasion, with a disco ball glistening in the sunset. Boots on, adventure ready and straps stealing the show.
