ADVENTURE GUIDE

Simple Outdoor Activities for Kids in the Dutch Countryside

Since moving to South Africa, our relationship with nature has changed in the best way. Life there naturally happens outdoors… wide spaces, open skies, dirt roads and the feeling that nature is part of your everyday rhythm.

It taught us to slow down. To go outside more. To let children explore instead of entertaining them.

Visiting the Netherlands now, we notice the countryside differently. The quiet paths, the canals, the fields, the forests. They each hold just as much opportunity for adventure. You just have to look for it.

And the beautiful thing? Children don’t need much to enjoy outdoor activities in nature.

No theme parks, no packed schedules, no expensive toys. Just time, fresh air and a bit of imagination.

What a simple day outdoors with kids in the Dutch countryside can look like

This day in the Dutch countryside was nothing elaborate. We packed a blanket, a sheet, a thermos, and a few snacks. The rest we found around us.

We built a small tent from a sheet and branches.
We went “fishing” by the water, with a fallen branch and a rope.
We collected sticks and leaves.
We shared warm drinks from simple cups.

To adults, it may look like “not much.”
To a child, it’s a full adventure.

Simple outdoor activities to do with kids

If you’re looking for easy outdoor activities for kids, here are a few ideas that always work:

• Build a mini shelter with a sheet and branches
• Go on a nature treasure hunt (leaves, stones, feathers)
• Sit by water and skip rocks or watch reflections
• Pack a small picnic and let them help prepare it
• Walk barefoot in the grass
• Let them “fish” with a stick and string
• Collect items for a nature table at home

These small activities build creativity, confidence, and connection to nature, without overstimulation.

Spending time outdoors like this also means dressing for it: durable leather shoes and comfortable layers make it easier to say yes to muddy paths, grassy fields and spontaneous family adventures.

Why Outdoor Play Is Important for Kids

Spending time outdoors helps children develop creativity, confidence and problem-solving skills. Simple nature activities also support healthy development and encourage curiosity about the world around them.

For families, outdoor time often leads to calmer, more connected days together.

Adventure starts close to home

As parents, we often feel pressure to do more.
But children remember how a day felt, not how much it cost. You don’t have to travel far for meaningful family adventures. Sometimes the best memories are made in the countryside just outside your door.

Nature does most of the work for you.
A field becomes a playground.
A stream becomes a discovery.
A sheet becomes a tent.

All they really want is time with you.

And years from now, those simple afternoons might be the ones they talk about most.
